Messae from the Director – May 2026
In this penultimate month of the academic year, the school community is busy with Examinations, more Events, and Transitions from one school to the next.
On Friday 22 May, it was a pleasure to witness the event of Hajj come to life across all campuses. We were transported to another land, with all the rituals represented and a model of the Holy Kaaba at the centre of it all. Thank you to all the staff involved in preparing this annual event and to our students for demonstrating the acts as young Hujjaj. I noticed that the weather was also very hot on the day, not far from the actual conditions pilgrims experience. One day, because of your efforts now, staff and dear students, you will experience the real thing! Belated Eid al-Hajj greetings to the ALMIIS community.Various Transition ceremonies have taken place at the end of May as our Year 6 Primary School students move to the Secondary School and our Reception students from the Nursery School to the Primary School, Year 1. When families, teachers, school administrators and leaders work together, the process of transitioning to from one school to another becomes a smooth process and reduces the amount of stress experienced by the child. All of our work around positive transitions is centred around the 5 C’s: Consistency, Communication, Child-Centred, Culture and Collaboration. When transitions are planned with care, understanding and a strong foundation of relationships, children feel safe, respected and ready to learn. My personal favourite was to see the Year 6 boys playing football with their buddies, the Year 7 boys.
We have a unique school in the form of AMSEN, offering Special Education provision that is second to none in Tanzania. Their immaculate organisation of the 2nd Special Needs Open Swimming Gala, held on Saturday, 9 May, was as unique as the school itself. The event included participation from various disability categories, with swimmers competing in age and gender-grouped events. It was wonderful to watch swimmers competing in races ranging from freestyle to relays. Watch out for these talented swimmers making even bigger splashes for Tanzania in the Special Olympics and Paralympics in the future! Another achievement in the pool came from our Primary and Secondary students participating in the recent Swahili Talent Swimming Competition in Dar es Salaam. The team attained first position, well ahead of its rivals
As a Science teacher, I thank all the teachers and students in the Secondary School for their work towards the ABLE project demonstrations on Tuesday, 19 May. Year 7 students investigated what makes an ideal solar oven, while Year 8 students investigated factors affecting the rate of photosynthesis by varying different conditions, including water. They also designed a water irrigation system as part of their enquiry-based learning. Our students have moved beyond memorising facts to evaluating explanations, identifying variables, and using evidence to solve problems.
We start thinking about careers quite early at ALMIIS. On Friday, 15 May, we had the opportunity to explore a variety of professions as part of the Primary School Year 4 Career Fair. I visited our budding doctors, fashion designers, and lawyers, to mention but a few. We must be one of the few schools to discuss careers so early in a child’s schooling. Thinking about careers in Primary School is vital for broadening children’s horizons, challenging early career stereotypes, and linking academic subjects to the real world. By introducing career-related learning early, we are helping young students build self confidence, foster a growth mindset, and prevent them from prematurely limiting their future educational choices. Thank you, Primary Year 4 team.
Our staff in the Nursery School have done an amazing job by giving up their Saturdays for Open Day events to showcase the excellent work they do at the school. There has been increased interest in the school, and you will shortly see billboards around town advertising the same. The Forestry School is a hidden gem within the Nursery School and is well worth visiting, as it forms an integral part of our Cambridge Early Years programme. The school also embarked on a charity drive, collecting new or second-hand items such as clothes, toys, stationery, and non-perishable food items. Thank you to the school community for donating. Proceeds have been delivered to the Amani Orphanage Centre in Bagamoyo.
The ALMIIS Football Tournament has now come to an end. Well done to our Under-13 teams for winning the tournament. They scored 20 goals without conceding throughout the competition, with 10 of those goals coming in the quarter finals, semi-finals, and eventually the final.
Our commiserations to the Under-15 team for losing on penalties in the final. We will miss the ALMIIS Saturday football sessions and the atmosphere it created. However, there is some consolation in the form of the World Cup next month! You can read more about the above events in this issue within the individual school sections. External examinations are about to come to an end. We would like to wish all the other year groups the very best as they embark on their end-of-year examinations.
A reminder to all parents that our re-enrolment process for the next academic yeaa r has begun. Please complete the re-enrolment form and pay the fee before 15 June to avoid losing your child’s seat for the next academic year.
Muntazir Hussein Datoo, Director of School – May 2026
